The 'Verzuz' Instagram live series launched by Timbaland and Swizz Beatz has gotten a lot of attention since quarantine started; pairing up some of the most talented musicians, songwriters, producers and more for the closest thing we can get to live music right now. Although, they've all been men up until this weekend.
Neo-soul sisters Erykah Badu and Jill Scott were the first females to participate in the battle which took place Saturday night. Both Grammy-winning artists came together in what felt like more of a love-filled musical trade-off than a battle. It also came at a much needed time as the music industry took a hit with the losses of Little Richard and Andre Harrell all in the same weekend.
Erykah and Jill provided nostalgic and soothing vibes that had viewers all over tuned in. The IG live set a new record for the Verzuz series with nearly 750K views, one of which being from former first lady Michelle Obama.
Both artists shared more than music, with stories and discussions of influence and friendship. They shouted out artists like Queen Latifah, Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, Nina Simone and more.
The "Bag Lady" singer kicked off the battle with The Roots featuring herself, "You Got Me," whose chorus was ironically enough written by Philadelphia's very own Jill Scott. So, Scott followed up with a live version of the same song with her singing her own hook and from then we got 3 hours of soul, funk, and good vibes.
